The most helpful resource I have found while researching design system thinking is a book called Atomic Design by Brad Frost. It was exactly the kind of process I was looking for when trying to craft a living design system, because it focuses less on what and more on how. For instance, Frost breaks design systems down into an easy to remember atomic structure consisting of atoms, molecules, organism, templates and then finally pages.
By starting first with atoms, like buttons, inputs or form element, you establish the foundation of your product and then can build those atoms into molecules that combine buttons, inputs and form elements into blocks to be reused or modified. Organisms take molecules like a single product card and can create grid elements and so on.
While the initial pattern builds may take longer in Pattern Lab, it is worth the effort. For every component and pattern update, the system records the p
attern title, pattern description, live example, contextual information, usage guidelines and requirements, code samples, internal and external resources, people involved and helpful meta data.
